Problem on α particle bombardment

Question:
In the following reaction sequence, bombardment of α particle on aluminium leads to its artificial disintegration in two different ways. Identify the product A, B and C.

Options:
a)    Neutron, positron, proton
b)    Proton, positron, neutron
c)    Positron, proton, neutron
d)    Neutron, proton, positron

Solution:

This question can be solved with some basic knowledge of radioactive decay.

When the alpha particles strike the aluminium atoms nucleus they combine to form new nucleus. One product is known so let’s find out the other unknown product.

Phosphorus (P) further divides into Silicon (Si). Thus:

So from the above reaction; it is clear that:

A =  0n1   =  Neutron
B =  1p1   =  Proton
C =  1β0   =  Positron

(The positron or anti-electron has an electric charge of +1e, a spin of ½, and has the same mass as an electron.)

Thus, option D is correct.
