Find the structure

Question: In which of the following compound carboxyl functional group (-COOH) is present.

Options:

a) Picric acid      b) Barbituric acid      c) Ascorbic acid       d) Aspirin

Solution:
This question is simply based on molecular formula and structure of the compound. So let's start with picric acid.

a) The molecular formula of picric acid or 2,4,6-trinitrophenol is C6H3N3O7.
b) The molecular formula of barbituric acid is C4H4N2O3 and is commonly known as 6-hydroxyuracil.
 c) The molecular formula of ascorbic acid is C6H8O6 and is commonly known as vitamin C.
d) The molecular formula of aspirin is C9H8O4 and is commonly known as acetylsalicylic acid.
Thus from the structure, it is clear that option d is correct.
